The incident, which occurred after Gada Biyu, before Kweita, a community close to Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), threw neighbouring communities into panic.
“The robbers disguised as clients seeking to exchange currency and then beckoned Hamisu to come. They swiftly grabbed his Ghana-Must-Go bag which was fully-loaded with local and foreign currencies, including dollars, pounds sterling and euros,” said a witness.
They were said to have shot sporadically in the air before whisking away the chief. Two children of the traditional ruler were reportedly injured in the attack.
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the 2019 edition of Abuja Carnival will be decentralised and will hold in area councils of the FCT, instead of restricting it to a few venues in the city centre.
