What is Christmas to the Igbo Traders in Nigeria. Christmas globally as well as in Nigeria is a family event. A celebration for Christians which is done annually on the 25th day of December.

There are just few weeks to Christmas and less than a couple of months to the New Year. Things are already shaping up for a lot of people who have been busy working and making money all year long. The festive periods come with a lot of spending and many can’t wait to travel home to meet their loved ones. As for those who are not traveling as a result of one reason or the other, there are many things they can engage in to have a wonderful time in the season.

Every year in December, millions of Nigerians go to church on Christmas Eve. They crowd shoulder-to-shoulder in “batchers”, kiosks or domes to light candles and sing “Silent Night”. A lot of persons participate in plays that recreate the birth of Jesus. And when the service is over, they exchange hearty “Merry Christmas!” wishes before beginning the trek home.

Road accidents become a recurring phenomenon in Nigeria especially during festivities such as Christmas. Numerous lives are lost while uncountable persons are injured in consequence of accidents. Accidents on our roads can be minimized if not avoided completely.

While growing up, Christmas is a day I looked forward to. There is this happiness and warmness in the neighborhood; almost everybody puts on a smiling faces and for the kids, we can’t but wait to adorn our Christmas clothes. As for me and my siblings, a good result at the end of the school term attracts gifts from our parents not to talk of the gifts Santa Claus brings from Rome (even though our teachers acted the part of Santa, it was unknown to us then). It is also an avenue for us to visit our friends and relatives. This period seems to be about jamboree but is that all the day entails is a question to be answered.
