Different parents from all over the world have employed several parental tips in raising their children over the years. While some of these tips succeed in enabling parents of some children to achieve their desired goal, others just seem to fall flat. As a parent, one of your duties is to make time for your children. There is no point in using your work as an excuse, trying to give them a good life by plunging yourself into your work, which leads to you neglecting them.
Most Nigerian parents don’t know the impact of missing out on half of the early parts of a child’s life. We seem to have more pressing issues to worry about rather than having a detailed record about Junior’s first words and first steps’ dates. However, this is not ideal if you want your child to love you rather than resent you. Parents all over the world employ the services of maids who take care of children around the clock, making the child form an inseparable attachment to the maid and being alienated from its father & mother.
Before having a child, I would, in my opinion, strongly advise couples to discuss their career options. Both parents can’t possibly go to a 9 – 5 job every day and leave their child in the care of the help. No. Your career shouldn’t interfere with raising your kids. Furthermore, as a parent, you need to talk to your children no matter how uncomfortable or awkward it may be because it encourages them to come to you. Forbidding them from doing something isn’t just enough, you may need to explain why it is wrong and let them know an example of the repercussions of such action.
Finally, never compare your children to others. Everybody has their individual flaws. In fact, you as the parent aren’t perfect and don’t have all the answers, that’s why you’re here, isn’t it?
