Southgate Points Who to Blame for England Loss

England head coach Gareth Southgate has come out to point out the person responsible for the Euro 2020 loss against Italy. The manager has taken full responsibility for England’s failure to lift the Euro 2020 trophy after 55 years.

The game played in their Wembley stadium ended 1-1 after the whole 90 minutes of play. Leonardo Bonucci cancelled out Luke Shaw’s second-minute opener, and the game was forced into the extra time. After the extra time, there was no from either of the teams, so they headed for a penalty shootout.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed from the spot, with Jordan Pickford saving two Italian penalties. Gareth Southgate said: “We prepared as well as we could for that, and that’s my responsibility. I chose the guys to take the kicks.”

He also said: “No-one is on their own in that situation. We decided to make the changes right at the end of the game, and we win and lose together as a team.” He admitted he made a late substitution, and it affected the team also on selecting Saka to play the fifth penalty.

He said: “That’s my decision to give him that penalty, so it is totally my responsibility: it is not him, Marcus or Jadon.” No England player won an individual award in the Euro 2020. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Spanish player Pedri all won an award. Pedri was named the Young Player of the tournament. Ronaldo won the golden boot with five goals while Donnarumma won the Player of the Tournament.
