Royal Antwerp Humbled Jose Mourinho and his Troops in Europa League
Lior Refaelov opened the scoring in the first 30 minutes of the game. Before the half-hour mark, Royal Antwerp scored the first and only goal of the game. The London team came into the match off a spectacular form, having won three of their last four matches. Jose Mourinho rang a couple of changes from the side that secured a slim 1-0 win over struggling Burnley on Monday.
Both Gareth Bale and Dele Alli made the starting line up against the Belgian giants. However, not even the Welshman could save Spurs from defeat as a stubborn Antwerp side clung on their lead to claim maximum points. Giovani Lo Celso will be named the man of the match for the away side. Antwerp went on to take the lead through Refaelov who fired home the opener after Ben Davies lost the ball to allow the hosts break.
Spurs nearly fell 2-0 down inside the first minute of the restart but Davinon Sanchez did well to recover and deny Refaelov a second shot on goal. Aware of their opponents’ threat, Mourinho introduced Kane in place of Bale, but not even the Englishman could help his side from a crashing. The result saw the English side drop to second of Group J with three points as Antwerp moved top with six points.
