Ifeanyi George of Enugu Rangers, who just 26-year-old of age was involved in a ghastly motor accident on Sunday morning alongside along Onitsha-Agbor-Benin road. Two other people were in the car when the accident happened. He was in company of his friends and it was one of his friends that was driving the car when the accident happened.
According to information given to the Rangers FC management, the car carrying the player and the two other people who are Enugu Rangers team B players ran into a stationary truck. The General Manager of Enugu Rangers Prince Davidson Owumi in a statement said: ‘We just heard this disturbing news this morning and what we hear is not palatable.
“I await information from my officials that are already on their way to the spot where the accident was said to have taken place. We call for prayers in this hour of pains.” This sad incident happened just few days after the League management gave a ten-days break for the team because of the suspension of all football activities by NFF.
Ifeanyi George’s death makes it the third of NPFL player dying in just two months in the year 2020. About a month ago there was a report of Remo Stars Football Club player that died in an accident iniotiedt by a SARS operative in Sagamu express road. Two weeks ago NPFL recorded the first Nigerian player to die in the field of play after Sam Okparaji.
The year 2020 has been a very sad one for not just Nigeria but the world of football in general with continuous increase cases of the COVID 19 virus. All sporting activities in the world are on shutdown with the Olympics still under probability as EURO2020 is has already been postponed.
