Newcastle United have completed the signing of Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett for £15m on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old joined Eddie Howe’s side on loan last season during the January transfer window. He made 16 Premier League appearances, during which Newcastle won 10 games, lifting them from the relegation zone to finish 11th on the league table.

Speaking on his new contract Matt Targett said: “I’m delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club.” “For me, it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the welcome I had from my fellow players, the staff, the supporters and the owners so I’m really happy to be here.” The fee for Targett was £15m but £2m had already been paid as a loan fee last season.
Newcastle United head coach Howe said: “Matt had a fantastic impact after joining on loan in January and made a big contribution to some excellent team performances.” “He is a great lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”
The manager is also looking at bringing in an attacker and a centre-back in the summer transfer window. Talks have been held with Stede de Reims attacker Hugo Ekitke and Lille centre-back Sven Botman who is also targeted by Manchester United he is also looking to link back to his Bournemouth defender Ake after Manchester City asked the defender to look for another club.
