Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi has finally won an international trophy for his country after Argentina beat host Brazil in the Copa Ameria final. An Angel Di Maria’s solitary goal was enough to end the Argentine’s many years of waiting for an international trophy.
Lionel Messi Wins Copa America thanks to Di Maria.
The game played in the early hours of Sunday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio, saw Paris Saint Germain (PSG) star, netted the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute of the game with a beautiful lobbed ball past Brazil goalkeeper, Ederson.

Di María’s goal was Argentina’s first shot on goal during the game, but what stands out is that this was the first goal for La Albiceleste in a title match since their 4-1 defeat against Brazil in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. Lionel Messi won the trophy exactly five years after his rival Cristiano Ronaldo won his first major trophy for his country, which means he is now equal with the Portuguese star.

Brazil had multiple chances as they won everything in the game except the most important, which is the scoreline. Everton star Richarlison scored in the 52nd minute of the game to equalise, but it checked and ruled out as it was offside. Lionel Messi, who is still a free agent, will now be open to future contracts from any club with his present club Barcelona willing to step up their price on him and Paris Saint-Germain also chasing him.
