Iker Gundogan of Manchester City and Germany player has said Liverpool deserves to be given the English Premier League title. According to him Liverpool are 25 points clear of his team Manchester City and so deserves the league title. The English Premier League was supposed to end by May but with less than eleven games to go before the suspension of the league due to coronavirus.
The German international says Liverpool has had a perfect season so it will be good if the league is given to them since the league seems like the league will not come to an end with the constant postponement of the resumption date. All English football has been suspended until April 30, but that date is expected to be pushed back, with the country’s current lockdown and social distancing measures likely to extend well beyond that date.
The Manchester midfielder said when asked if it will be wise and appropriate to give Liverpool the league, he said: “For me, that would be okay, yes. You have to be fair as a sportsperson.” The Germany midfielder admitted the prospect of a cancelled Premier League season, with no titles or relegation, was bound to split opinion
“There are different opinions. For clubs who have had a very good season, it obviously wouldn’t be nice if it was cancelled now. “On the other hand, for clubs who aren’t doing as well and are maybe in the relegation places, an abandonment would obviously suit them.”
Players all over Europa are currently working hand in with the government to help fight the coronavirus as they have been donating to help fight the virus. German clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, have accepted a wage cuts to help other employees at their clubs. Italian giant Juventus also accepted a wage cut for four months.
An English side is yet to introduce such policy, but Gundogan, says he would be willing to take a pay cut to support others. “Of course I think it’s okay, that goes without saying,” Gundogan said. “I’ve been partly following it from here and to be honest, there’s been no discussion in England yet.
The English teams are seen to be more financially stable more than other club sides so it will be nice if the clubs in England introduce the wage cut policy Gundogan said. “I don’t know who has the final say in that decision. On the other hand, if a player says, ‘no, I don’t want that, I worked hard for it, I get my salary’, then it can go in the opposite direction.
“For me personally, it would be okay but to be honest, you have to be tolerant and if there are players who are against that, then that’s also an acceptable situation.” Gundogan added. But for now the player is on the opinion that the league should title should be given to Liverpool with their impressive display this season.
