Netherland Dutch League are set to terminate their league following the extension of the national ban to 1st September. Currently Ajax and AZ Alkmaar are leading the Dutch league, and they have played 26 games each. The Dutch league is now on probability of the league will continue or not.
Ajax are currently topping the league on goal difference and are favorite to be the league should it end following the recent development. Dutch football’s governing body KNVB said in a statement it “intends not to continue playing the 2019/20 competition” but will consult Uefa before making a final decision.
Earlier on Tuesday, Uefa said some European leagues could be cancelled “in special cases” because of the pandemic.“Based on the government’s decision, the KNVB will consult with Uefa, after which the decision will be taken,” the KNVB statement continued.
“The KNVB has not yet definitively cancelled competitions because of financial difficulties in the football industry due to the corona crisis.” Dutch clubs will meet on Friday “to discuss the consequences” of the decision, while training grounds will reopen “under strict conditions” so that players can train.
About three weeks back, former Manchester United and Bayern Munich coach Luis Van Gal accused Ajax of taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic to claim the league title. Ajax management were saying for the interest of players and the fans they should terminate the league and crown them Dutch champions for 2019/20 season.
The Eredivisie was hoping they could resume but the Prime Minister said it is not wise to resume the league and play games behind closed doors without fans.
