Asthma Diet: What to Avoid and What Helps

Asthma is a popular respiratory issue which affects men and women of all ages. There are lots of drugs and supplements directed to help asthma patients alleviate the symptoms of the disease. However, aside from the drugs and way of life, the diet has a huge role to play in averting the symptoms of asthma. So, here are a few tips on what to eat and what to avoid if you are an asthma patient.

What to EAT:
  1. Fruits and Veggies: this is not to say that it will take away your breathing troubles. However, fruits and veggies contain antioxidants, vitamin E and C. They help to eliminate free radical particles that damage cells and inflame the lungs.
  2. Fatty Fish: Fatty fish like Salmon and swordfish contain an abundant quantity of vitamin D. Most of this is gotten from sunshine but supplementing them using the diet is an added advantage. Milk, eggs and orange juice also contain vitamin D. This nutrient strengthens the immune system and improves the body’s defense against germs and could lessen swelling in your airways which reduces your chances as having an asthma attack.
  3. Nuts: Nuts have a lot of good things in them like vitamin E which is amazing in controlling asthma for the asthma patients. Nuts and seeds like Almonds and Hazelnuts are good sources of vitamin E. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale also help.
  4. Fish: Fishes contain omega-3 fatty acids and they help to reduce the amount of IgE the body produces and as such improves the quality of the breathing process.
  5. Tomatoes: Food made from tomatoes seem to help people with asthma. Scientists think it may be lycopene that helps most. Studies show that consuming tomatoes makes the breath better over time.
What to Avoid:
  1. Dry Fruits: Talking of things to avoid if you have asthma, dried fruits are one of them. Though fresh fruits are amazing in the diet, the sulfites used in preserving the dried fruits could make the condition worse for the asthma patient.
  2. Beans: Reputed for its gaseous contribution to the body. It can bloat your belly and make it harder to breathe. This may trigger an attack.
  3.  Coffee: coffee contains chemicals such as Salicylates. These could make it harder to breathe especially for people with asthma.
  4. Liquid Nitrogen: it is commonly called “nitro puff”. You might notice a stream of smoky coldness that spirals from a fancy cocktail, a new frozen dessert at the mall, or other foods. It may look like fun, but it’s best to avoid it. It could cause breathing problems, especially if you have asthma, as well as a serious injury to the skin and even internal organs.
