Super Eagles of Nigeria broke Egypt’s record in the 1-0 opening Group D game. Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho was the man of the moment as he scored the only goal to seven-time champions Egypt in their Africa Cup of Nations Group D opener. The Leicester City striker opened the scoring in the 30th minute, burying a stunning half-volley on the turn.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s Goal Gave Nigeria Victory over Egypt
Nigeria dominated throughout, with Egypt keeper Mohamed El Shenawy tipping a Taiwo Awoniyi header onto the bar. The goalkeeper also denied Chidera Ejuke’s shots from entering the net. The Pharaohs offered little in response after falling behind in Garoua. It was the first time Egypt lost an opening African Cup of Nation clash. Kelechi Iheanacho’s performance up front will be a welcome relief to Super Eagles supporters, as they miss their top strikers to injury (Victor Osimhen) and clubs refusing to release one of their top strikers (Emmanuel Dennis).
The Super Eagles were well-supported at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, less than 400 miles from Nigeria. The three-time African champions continued to push for a second after half-time, with El Shenawy twice keeping out substitute Chidera Ejuke in the closing stages. Ultimately, one goal was enough for the West Africans, led by interim manager Augustin Eguavoen.
Egyptian star Mohamed Salah was out of the game as the Nigerian defence was up and doing to keep the player out. The Liverpool forward found himself isolated up front as Nigeria dictated the match’s tempo. Substitute Ahmed Sayed played through the forward with 20 minutes remaining, but his mishit shot was saved by the legs of Nigeria keeper Maduka Okoye.
Nigeria will face Sudan in Group D on Saturday (16:00 GMT), while Egypt will take on Guinea-Bissau (19:00 GMT).
