Ewa Agoyin is a local food, native to the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria. It is very popular in the streets of Lagos and Ibadan. Ewa means beans in Yoruba-land. Ewa Agoyin is a mixture of extremely soft beans and sauce; the beans and sauce are been prepared separate. It is then mixed together when it is done. It is served in homes and restaurants (mostly consumed by menial job workers in Lagos and Ibadan). There is a common slang phrase which says ‘’Ewa Agoyin go block belle’’ meaning ewa agoyin will fill your stomach as it is so delicious and very filling. This meal is best served with soft bread.
INGREDIENTS
The ingredients to be used for this delicacy are; Big-brown-beans, onions, seasoning, pepper, and tomatoes, vegetable oil and salt.
BEFORE PREPARATION
You have to pick the brown-black-eyed peas so as to remove look-alike pebbles and dirt. Blend the red pepper and tomatoes because they are to be used as the sauce. Slice the onions and set aside.
COOKING PROCEDURE
To prepare the sauce, heat your palm oil on a medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Add the blended pepper and tomatoes. Also add the sliced onions and fry for some minutes. Add your seasoning and salt to taste. The contents are then allowed to fry for about 10-15 minutes because if it is not dark, it is not ewa agoyin. You have to stir severally until they form like pebbles. When it reaches this stage, the sauce is done.
The beans for this meal; brown-black-eyed peas preferably is cooked mostly with a pressure pot as it will make the beans soft in a lesser time. Boil the picked beans in water and slice some onions. It should be cooked for till the beans are extremely soft and mashed. When this is done, the sauce is served with the beans to form the sumptuous delicacy. You can now enjoy with a very soft bread or plantain.
