American actor Will Smith has been banned from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years for slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made this known on Friday after disciplinary action was opened against Will Smith.
The 53-year-old actor is also banned from attending any other events held by Hollywood’s top film group over the next decade.
However, the disciplinary board decided against revoking the ‘Best Actor’ award he won at the gala for his role in the movie “King Richard.”
The president of the academy David Rubin, CEO Dawn Hudson in a letter said, “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022. Mr Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards.”
Will Smith took the headlines off the 2022 Oscars after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage for making a joke out of his wife’s condition.
Smith has since apologised and also announced he is stepping down from being a member of the Academy.
