Women can be said to be synonymous with fashion. Fashion on the other hand is not possible without measurement. So, now you see why you need to know about taking body measurements as a woman.
Personally, my own experience with measurements came after I gave the wrong measurements to a planner for my friend’s wedding. I received a dress four times my size on the wedding eve. Thanks to the maid of honor for saving the day with her intermediate sewing skills.
So, now you see how now know how to take measurement made me a plus size lady to the tailor, yours might not be that pleasant.
Ok, here is how to take body measurements.
What do you need: A cloth tape. Please note that the cloth tapes are always better than the metal tapes when taking body measurement.
MEASURING THE BODY
BUST: Measure the chest circumference. Put one end of the tape measure at the fullest part of the burst, wrap it around (under your armpits, around your shoulders blades and back to the front) to get the measurement.
WAIST: You need the circumference of the waist. Circle the tape around your natural waistline. Your natural waistline is located above your belly button and below your rib cage. Try not to suck in your stomach. Take note if you wear clothes below your waist.
HIPS: Measure the hip circumference. Start at one end of the hip and wrap the tape measure around your rear, around the other hip, and back to where you started. Ensure that the tape is over the largest part of your buttocks.
INSEAM: This is the part of your thigh to the bottom of your ankle. With help, you can measure while wearing your pants. Just get someone to stretch the tape from your crotch to the bottom of the ankle. Without help, you can use a pair of pants that suits you well and measure the inseam of the pants. Make sure it is from the crotch to the hem.
THIGH: Measure the circumference of the fullest part of your thigh. Wrap the tape around your thigh from front to back and then around to the front. Do not lower the tape from the fullest part of your thigh, you will not get an accurate measurement.
UPPER ARM: Measure the circumference of the arm. Wrap the tape around the widest part of your upper arm from front to back and around to the start point.
SLEEVE LENGTH: If you cannot do this yourself get some help. Place your hand at your waist (your elbow should be bent at a 90-degree angle). Then start at the middle of the back of your neck and measure to your shoulder, down your arm to the elbow, and then on to the wrist.
This is not particularly exhaustive as the measurements might change depending on the target design but hey, this is a way to start. Practise will definitely help you become better.
