Buying and Registration of SIM
Buying and registration of SIM cards have been suspended in Nigeria by the federal government.
According to a statement released by Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde, the Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, ordered the suspension.
Giving the reason for the suspension, Adinde said it is to allow an audit of the subscribers who have already been registered.
The statement released in Abuja also added that the move is in line with the compliance of the Mobile Network Operators, MNOs.
He however gave an exception that the suspension might be lifted only when it is necessary, which is also dependent on the federal government’s approval.
While stressing the importance of compliance, he said sanctions have been put in place for operators who disobey.
“MNOs are to please note that non-compliance with this directive will be met with strict sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawal of operating licence.”
