In today’s article I would be telling you why communication is key in every relationship. At the company I worked after my NYSC, two ladies seemed to have this tension around each other it was unspoken, but it was there; let’s give them names Cookie and Cupcake. Cupcake bakes, so she brings cake to the office from time to time.
The first day she brought cake, she shared it with everyone at the office. All I knew was the toilet got clogged; it came to my knowledge later that day that Cookie tried flushing her piece “maybe she didn’t like it”.
One day, my boss decided to be random and asked everyone their favourite and least favourite person at the office. So Cookie was asked, and Cupcake was present. Cookie said I was her favourite person, and she doesn’t have a least favourite person. Cupcake spoke up, saying, “I know I am her least favourite person,” and she mentioned the cake incident. Cookie explained that she was chewing the cake when she felt the sudden urge to pee, so she rushed into the toilet with the cake in her mouth.
She said felt irritated chewing on it in the bathroom, so she spat it in a tissue and tried flushing; then, the toilet got clogged. Cupcake realized that it wasn’t as deep as she thought it was, only if they had addressed the issue immediately by communicating. The tension between them wasn’t killed, but it was significantly reduced.
There used to be a time when I never expressed how I felt towards something someone would do to me even if it’s cut was profound; I’ll harbour it, which made me miserable because I knew I was giving the person the opportunity to hurt me again.
Most times I just become really sad, till one day someone annoyed me and I told the person how I felt then the person apologized, it felt so good I just knew at that point that I had to express myself in a healthy way which is communicating. So to date, if I have a problem with what you have done, I’ll call you out on it, privately and most nicely, no matter how old you are, trust me, I have gained more friends than enemies with this.
Reasons Why Communication Is Key
Communication is the foundation to every beautiful relationship. Communication stops unwanted bad energy. In my opinion, most squabbles and quarrels are caused by misunderstandings, so sitting and talking makes you understand a person better and coexist. A lack of communication breeds assumptions of what the other person is thinking or feel, which is incorrect. Communication isn’t just a thing; it’s everything.
If we all communicated better, do you know how many wars or riots could have been avoided?. Mama Bashir would not have been fighting with Ngozi this morning and causing a ruckus if they had just talked. So I urge you all to speak to that parent, that co-worker, that friend, that classmate, that boss, that spouse. Even if you think you weren’t wrong, still call that person and talk and remember always to be polite.
With communication, you’ll also experience a process that decreases stress and supports physical, emotional and psychological well-being. We also need to understand that communicating is more about listening than talking.
There are a few things to notice when communicating; be honest and open about your feelings. Like I mentioned earlier, don’t forget to listen and be very attentive to non-verbal signals; pay attention to their body language and emotions.
To have a healthy and smooth relationship with anyone, be it a lover, a stranger or a family member, communication is key
