What is Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day which is also called Saint Valentine’s or the Feast of Saint Valentine is a day marked to honor one or two early saints named Valentinus. This day celebrated annually on February 14 is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.
According to folklore, Saint Valentine of Rome (who was imprisoned) restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge and then wrote a letter signed ‘’Your Valentine’’ as farewell before his execution. He has since being honored with a feast by Pope Gelasius in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14. St. Valentine, the Christian martyr died on the date AD 296.
The day first became associated with romantic love in the 14th century. It later grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as ‘’valentines’’). Till today, greeting cards bearing the Valentine’s symbol (a heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged cupid) have been give away to lovers, couples, families, and friends.
This day is now celebrated in many parts of the world today including Asia, Latin America, Europe, Africa and so on. Just like the Christmas boxing day where gifts are being shared among loved ones, Valentine’s day is another day to share gifts although with much romantic love being share by lovers.
In the United States, about 190 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, not including the hundreds of millions of cards school children exchange. It has become a major source of activity in many countries like this.
In Nigeria, lovers spend times with themselves, boyfriends and girlfriends also have romantic nights out. Many programs are organized by the entertainment industry this day. Entertainers and the likes make use of this day also to make more money for themselves as they organize show. Churches are not left out as they also organize love-themed services for their members.
