Are we Truly Nigerians or we are just fooling Ourselves?
The recent unrest in the country has got me asking and wondering if our unity is true or patched to fake ‘One Nigeria’. I have been asking myself are we Nigerians first before anything else or is it just mere say.
There are scare of crisis/tribal war in some parts of the country due to the recent #endsars protest. This has made hoodlums to take the opportunity to disrupt peaceful protests and has led to the loss of lives and properties.
One of the videos posted on social media that went viral really said much about how we are. A Pro SARS leader was seen telling Nigerian Police that his group will attack peaceful protesters in 48 hours. He further said they contend with the protestants if they fail to vacate the street of FCT, Abuja. In his statement, the #endsars protesters should go to their HOMELANDS and allow his people.
Are We Really One?
It is shocking to hear a Nigerian making such statement in a nation we claim ‘One Nigeria‘. He went as far as promising to cause havoc if they fail to do as he has requested. This was seen later as lives were lost and properties burnt by thugs in Apo area of Abuja.
This led to battle as the Hausa thugs clashed with the Southerners in that area as peoples’ shops were burnt down as well as lives lost.
I began to question if we were really Nigerians before anything else? The Southerners in some areas had to guard their own territory aftermath of the battle earlier in the day which made armed men to question other inhabitants returning from work on Monday 19th of October, 2020 where they were heading to in that axis. This was done to check peoples’ intonation (language) so as to retaliate the Northern hoodlums.
Nigeria is 60 years of independence and living together but nothing good has been done. In the national anthem we all echo ‘Unity & Peace’ but do we have that “Peace and Unity”? Are we Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Christian, Muslim, Traditionalist, Feminist or what have you before being a Nigerian?
If we are really ‘One Nation‘ is it not deception if we say people should go to their homeland? In ‘our own’ country or question someone holding a political office in another region different from ours in the country?
For the labour of heroes past not to be in vain, we must be Nigerian before anything else if truly we are ‘One Nigeria‘.
