Nigerian singer, Omah Lay, has revealed a surprising incident involving a fellow artist who allegedly stole the concept for his upcoming album. In an interview with Zach Sang, Omah Lay shared that he had confided in a colleague about his vision for the project, only to discover that the colleague had later released an album with the same central theme.
Omah Lay explained that he had approached the unnamed artist intending to collaborate on the album, believing that their combined talents would create something exceptional. However, the situation took a turn when the colleague decided to pursue the project independently, incorporating the ideas that Omah Lay had shared.
“My song ‘Holy Ghost’ is a new sound. I was going to make the whole album with the new sound but along the line, I changed my mind,” he said.
“I shared an idea with a certain artist and the artist went ahead and put out an album with my idea and I had to re-record my album.
“He came to me and I accepted for us to collaborate. Of course, it’s an artist that I love. And I told him where I’m headed with the sound. Five months later, he put out an album with exactly all the same sound that I shared with him”.
Feeling betrayed by the incident, Omah Lay was forced to revisit his album plans and re-record the entire project. He emphasized that the experience had ultimately led him to create something even more groundbreaking, stating, “I had to go back and remake my album which is going to be the greatest album of all time in Afrobeats history.”
While Omah Lay did not disclose the identity of the artist involved, his allegations have sparked discussions within the Nigerian music industry about the importance of protecting intellectual property and maintaining trust among collaborators.
