Every Nigerian that uses a computer knows about Windows OS. In fact, it has become the staple operating system for most individuals and businesses. There is a question that still lingers though and this may be just for computer heads, but do you think Microsoft needs to overhaul its legacy operating system?
Just last week at Computex in Taipei, Microsoft did not focus specifically on a particular product. Instead, its keynote hinted at what could be the future of their current OS.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft’s President of Consumer and Device Sales, Nick Parker, made a couple of bold statements about what a modern operating system should look and feel like. He states that a modern OS should enable “form factor agility” which will allow it integrate seamlessly across devices.
He added a couple of other cool features that a modern OS must have when he asserted that operating systems should be able to update automatically in the background without forcing any user interference. This OS should also come fully equipped to prevent attacks by separating the state from the operating system and the compute from applications.
Furthermore, he stated that a modern OS would constantly connect to a really fast network like LTE 5G and use efficiently designed AI-powered apps. It would also support different kinds of input, including pen, voice, touch and even the ability to use your eyes to control apps or write.
So far, I think Microsoft is trying to build out an entirely new interface with the Surface line up, and there are speculations that a smartphone might follow. There are also speculations that the new OS will be developed with new laptop designs like dual-screens and a series of mobile products.
At the heart of every computer there is an operating system that powers utility for its users. If not, then machines can only remain machines. Anyway, if not for anything else, you should know that when the President of Devices and Services at Microsoft is talking about a possible venture, then it is likely that it could become a reality soon.
