Following Italy’s victory over Spain, Jorginho’s teammate Lorenzo Insigne has tipped the player for the Ballon d’Or award because of the player’s composure to take the winning penalty. According to Lorenzo Insigne, he said: “You have to get that so spot on, or you look idiotic.”
Lorenzo Insigne Tipped Jorginho for Ballon d’Or Award
The Napoli and Italy striker said they have seen Jorginho frequently played and converted penalties like that for his club side Chelsea, but the one he scored against Spain is under the highest of pressure. He stressed that if the Chelsea man had missed the penalty, it would have been wrong.
He said with about 66,000 fans and spectators watching on at Wembley, Jorginho kept his cool and slotted in the fifth and decisive penalty to give Italy the edge over the Spaniards. Lorenzo Insigne is not the only person to have said this. Chris Sutton also said the same thing, and he said: “I think Jorginho should be considered for the Ballon d’Or. He should after that,”
Juventus striker Federico Chiesa opened the scoring for Italy in the 60th minute of the game before another Juventus player Alvaro Morata equalised 20 minutes later for Spain as the game extended to extra time. The two teams could not get a deciding goal, and so they went into a penalty shootout.
It did not start well for Italy as Manuel Locatelli saw his effort saved by Simon, but Spain’s Dani Olmo blazed over, and Morata saw his effort kept out by Gianluigi Donnarumma. They are now through to the finals waiting for either England or Denmark, who will be playing later this evening.
