I’m Asari (Ep 3): Duo

“Asari,” I heard Max call out as he approached. “I apologize, really.” He said, as he held my waist from behind and bent to plant a kiss on my neck.

Oooh the things I felt, I had instant butterflies. I could tell he was indeed sorry and I felt a bit foolish to have exaggerated by walking away. “I hear you. I’m sorry too, I shouldn’t have been so dramatic.”

“I would’ve walked out too, my behavior was bad. You forgot something by the way.”

“What’s that?” I turned around to look, but my lips were met by his.

His soft lips were on mine and I had no choice but to kiss him back. If I tell you it was my best kiss ever, believe me. If you have watched The Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway’s popular dialogue goes: ‘You know in old films whenever a girl would get seriously kissed, her foot would kind of – pop.’ That’s exactly what happened to me, I was floating.

I broke the kiss and giggled. “You’re so corny.”

“Why?” He asked, all smug.

“You forgot something by the way,” I said, mimicking him.

My phone buzzed. My taxi had arrived.

“Wow, you already ordered a car? I want to spend more time with you. I’ll take you home.”

“I’ll just call the driver. I even forgot that was happening.” Without any hesitation, I canceled the trip and called the driver to apologize.

“Is there anywhere you’d like to go?” Max asked as he led me by my waist. I just love the fact that he’s so tall, so my 5 ‘9 self feels small beside him.

“I hope you mean mine because you’re not going home now.”

“Told you I don’t go out on work nights, so I’m tired and need to sleep. But, I’ve had the best time.”

“Except…I annoyed you. I’ll make up for it, I promise. I apologize again.”

I smiled. “It’s really okay.”

Again, the drive home was us just talking about everything…work, family, tv shows. He dropped me off then gave me another kiss as “something to make you dream of me.”

I did just that and this morning, I’m here thinking about what happened with Max last night and imagining what could have happened, then *Ring!* It was Tobe.

“Hey you, it’s been ages. How are you?”

“Not too bad. You?”

“Did I tell you I was traveling to Lag? Work is killing me here.”

“Aww, I’m sorry. Are you coming back soon though? I think I miss you.” I did.

“You think?”

“Okay, I’ll put it this way. I haven’t seen you in a while so it’ll be good to see you again.”

“I want to see you again too. I’ll be back next week, so we have no problem.”

“I can’t wait! By the way, you’re the worst person to text. That’s why you haven’t heard from me for this long.”

He chuckled, “I knowww, Asari. Again, I’m sorry I’m that person.”

“Yeah, I’m not complaining, I just wanted you to know why I wasn’t in touch.”

“Naah it’s good. Plus you’ve been busy, I hear.”

“Ah, Efosa was quick to spill o.” I was laughing.

“Hmm, he was. In his exact words… ‘guy I saw your girlfriend on a date with someone that will beat you hands down.’ I wanted to cry.”

Let me tell you about Tobe before the call ends…

I was at Duo for shisha and drinks with Ashezi and Lota (my girls) and we were arguing about the Kardashians.

“Asari, are you serious? How can you say Kim is not a good role model?” Ashezi said. I was surprised by her stance because she’s usually the one out of us three with conservative views.

“I’m not saying she can’t be a role model for girls who want to be like her. She’s just not my cup of tea.”

“Why?” Lota asked.

“Ah ah. Is it by force to like those people?”

“But we’re not asking you to like them. The statement you made was, ‘I don’t think these people are good role models for girls,’ so we’re just asking why you think so. You haven’t answered.” Lota and I are almost always on the same side, so I was also surprised we weren’t this time.

“Okay, it’s cos of her come-up. I don’t like that she had to become famous by making a sex tape. Women are suffering enough by being sexually objectified, so the message she’s sending is quite uncomfortable.”

“But you’re always for sexual liberation and the right to do what you want with your body,” Ashezi said.

“True.” I felt like I had lost the ‘battle’.

“Plus, look at you judging someone while smoking shisha. You’re the one actually doing harm to your body.” Lota said, laughing.

“Okay, you people have won.” We all laughed and my phone rang. It was my mum. “I’ve been saved,” I said while I got up to go outside.

As I ended the call, I turned around to go back inside when I saw this nice looking guy standing there.

“Your friends are right, you know,” He said. “Although she’s not my cup of tea either, I think that to be able to bring up this empire from a sex tape is a huge achievement. There are many people with sex tapes who haven’t ‘blown’.”

“But isn’t that just luck?” I replied.

“Isn’t life a game of luck?”

“Ugh, why do I keep losing tonight?”

“You’re not losing, you’ve met me now.” He said grinning, then extended his hand. “I’m Tobe by the way.”

“And you’re cocky. I’m Asari.” I took his hand for the shake and continued, “why were you listening in on our conversation?”

He was laughing. “It was impossible not to. My friend and I are sitting across from you and you were not whispering. Plus, I keep up with the Kardashians sometimes, so I was interested.”

“I didn’t realize how loud we were,” I said and started to head back in.

“Are you going back in without giving me a way to keep in touch? I couldn’t meet you inside because I’m intimidated by women in groups. Especially beautiful women.”

“Aha! You’re not as confident as you seem.”

“I am. Oh, and I didn’t want to be rude too.”

“Okay,” I rolled my eyes. “I’ll give you my number if you come and say hi to my girls.”

“Not a problem.” He said.

We went back in and he met Lota and Ashezi. He blended in with our group so well and even invited himself and his friend (Efosa) to our table for the rest of the night.

We’ve gone out on many dates and built a strong friendship since then. So he’s like ‘my G’, but my G that’s good looking and I’ve made out with a lot.

There was a long pause before I responded, but I laughed. “Girlfriend? Do you feel threatened?”

“Of course I do.”

“Well, you don’t have to. I still want to be a free bird now.”

“This your free bird thing. Don’t forget that I’m on the list, that’s my wahala.” We both laughed.

“So I’m not going to hear from you until you’re around right?” I asked.

“Hmm, now that I know there’s a hot competition, I’m going to text you every day.”

I laughed, “but there’s always been competition.”

“Yea, but not HOT. Anyway, I’ll talk to you soon, there’s this website I need to finish working on.”

“Okay, talk to you later.”

With that, the call ended and I forgot I was kissing Max just last night.
