Following the shocking knockout of Super Eagles of Nigeria from the ongoing African Cup of Nation in Cameroon, Super Eagles interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has decided to step down from the managerial role. Augustine Eguavoen Sets Down as Super Eagles Interim Head Coach
There was a clamour for the former Eagles player to be made permanent head coach following the Super Eagles impressive start in Cameroon. Nigeria was the only team to win all three of their group stage games and also the only team to keep two clean sheets in the group stage. The three-time champions however crashed out of the 2021 AFCON finals on Sunday going down to a 1-0 defeat against Tunisia.
Austin Eguavoen speaking about his resignation, said: “I’m the technical director of the NFF. I will go back to my job and allow the authorities to decide (who the next Super Eagles coach will be).” It remains to be seen whether the NFF will stick with Eguavoen or cement the appointment of Portuguese Jose Peseiro.
