There has been destruction in Anambra State as a dispute degenerated into a full-blown crisis that resulted in carnage.
Destruction In Anambra State over land dispute
The Ezi Nkewelle and Osile Ogbunike communities, both in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, clashed over a disputed piece of land.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the conflict broke out during the weekend when suspected hoodlums from one of the communities blocked the road and smashed vehicles belonging to passersby because they were stopped from gaining access to the land.
The eyewitnesses said the clash could yet escalate, as both communities allegedly mobilised to attack each other and possibly cause more destruction in Anambra State.
The Chairman of Ezi Nkwelle Community, Chief Wilfred Okafor confirmed the clash, saying that the attack was from Osile Ogbunike community youths.
Okafor called on the Anambra State government to quickly intervene to avert a more significant clash, insisting that a monument promised by the state government to show a clear distinction of the land for both communities have not been installed because the Osile Ogbunike community refused to make it’s a contribution to the agreement.
He also blamed police for complicity in the clash, claiming that the state police command had earlier stopped Nkwelle community members from accessing the disputed land, but could not do the same to Osile youths.
CSP Mohammed Haruna insisted that the police exist to make peace and to avert security breaches.
He denied that the command was on the side of anyone in the disputed land matter.
