Former Bournemouth striker Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal to help his side Villarreal stun German champions Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. The Spanish side was superb from the outset and led inside 10 minutes when Danjuma stabbed in from close range.
Arnaut Danjuma Scored the Only Goal as Villarreal Beat Bayern
The goals would have been more but Francis Coquelin had a goal ruled out while Gerard Moreno hit the post as Villarreal pushed for a second. Bayern Munich played a bit below expectation as they did not manage a shot on target until the second half.
Their hitman Robert Lewandowski, who has scored 51 goals for club and country this season, was kept quiet by a well-organized Villarreal defense as the hosts followed up their impressive win against Juventus in the previous round with another big result.
But as poor, as Bayern were they will feel they can turn things around against the Spanish side when they come for the return leg in Germany which is just seven days from now.
Bayern Munich would have gotten a goal but they came late into the game. Kingsley Coman saw an effort saved by Geronimo Rulli at his near post in stoppage time but an equalizer would have been supremely harsh on brilliant Villarreal, who understandably celebrated wildly when the full-time whistle was blown. The goal from the Dutch International Arnaut Danjuma was enough to put a smile on the faces of the Villarreal team who will travel to Germany next week with the hope of building on this win.
