Cotton buds are generally used for removing ear wax. What most people don’t know is that ear wax actually protects our ears from infection and damage. It is laced with antibacterial properties and also traps dust and dirt in the ear canal. This process stops the dirt and dust from reaching the more fragile eardrum, located deep in the ears.
Everyone enjoys the sweet feeling that comes from sticking in a cotton bud into the ears. However, cotton buds are bad for the ears. This is because the bud picks out only the top of the wax, pushing the remaining wax further down the ears. This can affect the ear drum and cause deafness.
The ear has a self-cleaning conveyor belt mechanism that is responsible for automatically pushing out excess ear wax and also prevents the wax from building up more than necessary. This isn’t noticed by most because it happens while asleep or while having a bath.
However, if the ears must be cleaned, it is safer to use ear wax drops.
Hope this information helps.
