In the wake of the outbreak, many Nigerians were asking for President Buhari to address the nation, in order to assure them that he is on top of the situation.
They clamoured that other presidents in different nations of the world have been able to give their citizens assurance of safety, adequate protection, plus measures put in place to nip the spread of the virus.
President Buhari was called out via different platforms, with different requests thrown at him. President Donald Trump of the United States of Americal and other heads of nations were used as instances to buttress these points.
But coming to think of it, Nigerians have failed to realise that our President is not Davido and has nothing close to Dauda in his name. After much ado, the President decided to listen to the cry of his people and decided to address them little did he know what the outcome of that would be.
Part of his speech goes, “Every country in the world has taken measures to ensure the disease does not spread. These measures are not meant to subject people to suffering but to ensure everyone is safe. “
“This government is no different in fighting the spread of COVID-19. We’ve agreed as Government of Nigeria to implement the following laws immediately: “All federal government officials and workers are hereby banned from all foreign trips. “
President Buhari also added that “As part of our effort to stop this COVID-19 pandemic spread, the following countries are hereby banned from coming to Nigeria or anyone from Nigeria going there, United States of America, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Iran.”
After the address, no matter how short you said it was, then come Nigerians asking, “where is the assurance in what the president just said?” Some people who were tired of the insertable appetite for assurance by Nigerians asked: “what do you want from this man?”
Since we can’t all think the same way and for the fact that our needs are different, some other sets for persons think Nigerians should stop asking for assurance through word of mouth but look out for implementable plans and actions following them.
Nigerians have been advised to look away from getting the right pronunciation of Coronavirus and Covid-19, but ensure we play our parts in ensuring that we keep ourselves and our neighbors safe. Many will agree that individuals should be able to adhere strictly to the social distancing advice, frequent washing of hands, application of hand sanitizers, wearing face masks where and whne necessary among many other precautionary measures.
You might want to agree that President Buhari will not help coughing or sneezing Nigerians cover their mouths with a tissue or disposable napkins.
Another set of Nigerians will not want to spear President Buhari and his media handlers for what they called a none assuring speech amidst fears and uncertainties like this. When offices, businesses, schools, and other essential aspects of human life are folding up, what can be more soothing than a world of assurance from your leader?
Above all, if politicians who approached you in the corner of your street to give you a cup of rice and beans can’t contact you with a bottle of hand sanitizer and face masks at this point, ensure you keep yourself save to witness the next elections.
Do all it requires to be part of those who will tell the history of the Coronavirus outbreak that rocked the world and shut it down. Let’s talk some more after the Coronavirus pandemic is gone, strick compliance to social distancing just occurred to me.
