Club Bruges have been declared Belgian’s 2019/20 champions. The country’s Pro League management last raised the motion to terminate the league prematurely because of the coronavirus pandemic that is ravaging the world. While other leagues are planning on resumption although not all players are in support, the Belgian side has made Club Bruges the league champions for the 2019/20 season.
Club Bruges are 15-points over second place, Gent, with one match left to play before the league was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. The decision to make them the champions was agreed upon and it means they have now won the league 17 times and this one is their third in the last five seasons.
Club Bruges now have an automatic spot in next season’s Champions League group phase. Belgium was the first country in Europe to cancel its league, but the decision still had to be ratified by the clubs at Friday’s general assembly. In the meeting, they also confirmed that Waasland-Beveren would be relegated while Gent would enter next season’s Champions League, with Charleroi, Royal Antwerp and Standard Liegewill play in the Europa League.
