Abusers of the naira notes have been reminded that they would face the full wrath of the laws if they continue abusing the legal tender.
Passing this message across was the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, reiterating the financial regulators would prosecute every individual found guilty of this misconduct.
Central Bank is not alone carrying out this directive as they would coordinate this procedure in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU.
The apex bank disclosed this in a statement made available yesterday by the acting Director, Corporate Communication, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, themed, “CBN, Police others to prosecute abusers of Naira.”
The warning, directed to abusers of the naira notes, became necessary, adding that some people flagrantly abuse the legal tender at social functions.

Naira Notes Abusers
The CBN’s Notice reads in parts, “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria has again been drawn to the activities of persons, who flagrantly abuse the legal tender by hurling wads of naira notes in the air and stamping on the currency at social functions.
“Mishandling, defacing and hawking naira notes at social events violate Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (As amended). The naira is our legal tender and symbol of national pride. Let us respect it and handle it with care,” the statement added.
