Following the call-up of Karim Benzema back to the national team by France, Germany has also called back Bayern Munich striker Thomas Muller and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels to the national team. The two players have been recalled to the Germany squad for the up Euro 2020.
Germany manager Joachim Low has picked the pair in his 26-man squad, even though he said in 2019 that he would not select any player who has retired from international duty. Bayern striker Thomas Muller has scored 11 goals and registered 18 assists in the German Bundesliga this season.
On the other hand, Hummels has been very productive in the defence line for Borussia Dortmund this season. While Thomas Muller won the Bundesliga title Mats Hummels won the German Cup with Dortmund. On social media, Muller said “back again”, while Hummels wrote he was “glad to be back” and “really up for the new chapter”.
Germany has not been having the best of games since 2020. They suffered their heaviest competitive defeat when Spain beat them 6-0 in the Nations League in November last year. According to Germany head coach Joachim Low, he said: “You can interrupt an overhaul under the circumstances.” He recalled the players because his defence, according to him, does not have the desired stability.
Bringing back Mats Hummels, who is a player who influences other players, can bring that stability back also in the attack line, their point man and brings experience.” The manager also picked 18-year-old Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala. The player who chose Germany over Nigeria and England have been imposing in Bayern Munich.
Germany is in Group F for Euro 2020, along with France, Hungary and Portugal. The tournament will start on the 11th of June to end on the 11th of July. The tournament was delayed by one year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
