Popular American actor Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars academy, days after he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage.

Will Smith, later announced the winner of the Best Actor in a Motion Picture at the gala apologised to his compatriot during his acceptance speech.

The actor said his actions were “shocking, painful and inexcusable,” adding that he has betrayed the trust of the academy and deprived others of the opportunity to celebrate their extraordinary success.
After outrage from fans and followers of the awards, the academy opened a review of Smith’s action, sighting a disciplinary action might be taken against him.
In a turn of events on Friday, Smith announced his resignation as a member of the academy, accepting the consequences that follow.
Smith said, “I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate.
“I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.”
