A female lecturer at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) was beaten to coma by a student in her office.
The lecturer, who was known as Mrs Zakariyyah of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Life Sciences, was attacked in her office by a 400 level student.
The student, who was known as Captain Walz, was said not to have observed the compulsory Student Industrial Training (I.T) and reportedly sought the help of his lecturer, who was his project supervisor.
An eyewitness reported that the student “entered into the lecturer’s office and started banging her table, after a brief discussion, then moved closer to her and slapped her.”
“Mrs Zakariyyah was able to run out of her office but was pursued into another office by Walz, who then started punching her.”
“In an attempt to fight him off, the lecturer fell, sustained cut to the head and was strangled by the student till she entered into Coma.”
The incident was confirmed on Sunday in a statement by the Director of Corporate Affairs of the institution, Mr Kunle Akogun.
It further confirmed that Mrs Zakariyyah has been stabilized and recuperating after the ugly incident on Thursday.
“She was visited in the hospital by the Vice-Chancellor of the Institution Professor Sulyman Abdulkareem; the Dean, Faculty of Science Professor Oladiji; the Director, University Health Services, Dr Odunola and some other staffs.”
The vice-chancellor described the incident as unfortunate and assured that justice would be served appropriately.
“I am reiterating that the welfare of all staff and law-abiding students of the institution is of utmost importance.”
The student has since been arrested by the University security personnel and handed over to the police.
UNILORIN Student Attacks Lecturer
Meanwhile, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria has condemned the student’s action.
They described it in their statement as “animalistic, irresponsible, barbaric and unpardonable.”
In a press statement released in Ilorin on Sunday, the National Coordinator of the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, has called on the Kwara State Commissioner of Police to ensure early prosecution of the suspect.
Alhaji Ibrahim stated that education would continue to be in danger if any irresponsible student, no matter their family background or status, was allowed to attack a lecturer for whatever reason.
He wants the institution to strengthen its war against cultism and all forms of crimes which has enhanced the “irresponsible reaction of this nature.”
