Following why and how the All Progressives Congress, APC, chose no fewer than thirteen Presidential Candidates for the party primaries already by the corner, the Chairman, APC Presidential Screening Committee, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, helps explains the reasons.
Initially, there were twenty-three presidential aspirants all hoping to grab the ticket and become flag bearer for the party to stand during the forthcoming 2023 General Elections.
However, Chief Oyegun said that the committee engaged all twenty-three presidential hopefuls that appeared before it on issues of consensus, while briefing members, as he submitting the 7-man committee report to the party`s National Chairman Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, on Friday in Abuja.
He also said while addressing the National Working Committee, NWC, stating that the screening team had the privilege of being inaugurated on May 30, and immediately started work same day to get the right and qualified candidates for the election.
He said, “All the aspirants were engaged on the issue of consensus and it was a pleasant surprise that 98 to 99 per cent of them agreed that the party is supreme, that whatever it finally decides with proper consultations, would likely be accepted.”
He further pointed out that several prominent Nigerians within and outside the country to applied to participate at the primaries, but could not proceed with their applications.
“The quality of the aspirants were unquestionable, the committee was surprised at the active participation of youthful members of the party,” he said.
He said for this reason, the ability of the aspirants to lead, their background, experience and understanding of the Nigerian situation became critical for the selection process.
