As countries around the world looked forward to the cure for Coronavirus, the World Health Organisation, WHO has reacted to a herbal tonic manufactured by a Doctor in Madagascar for the treatment of Coronavirus, COVID-19 patients.
The Organisation again warned that there are no published scientific studies of the herbal tonic to determine its effects.
It advised countries against adopting a product that has not been taking through a clinical test to determine its efficacy.
WHO Demands Clinical Test For Madagascar Herbal Tonic
WHO Africa Director, Matshidiso Moeti, made this known at a press briefing where she called on Madagascar to take the drink through a clinical trial.
Moeti further stated that African governments had committed to taking traditional therapies through the same clinical trials as other medication in 2000.
Also in a post on her Twitter handle Moeti emphasised that new medicines must be tested and be in line with scientific standards.
“New medicines must be tested and be in line with ethical and scientific standards. We caution countries against adopting products that have not undergone rigorous clinical trials to ensure their safety and effectiveness against #COVID19.”
The COVID-Organics infusion is derived from Artemisia, a plant with proven anti-malarial properties and other indigenous herbs.
Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and the Niger Republic have already received consignments of the potion, others such as Tanzania have expressed interest.
