Akashat Ny’mat, a presenter on TVC, has criticized Nigerian artist Davido for his recent comments about the country, describing them as irresponsible. She argued that as a privileged dual citizen, Davido should use his influence to promote Nigeria and attract foreign investors rather than discourage them.
Ny’mat emphasized that the average Nigerian, struggling in rural areas like Ede or Bida, is in dire need of an enabling labor market and opportunities, not negative portrayals of the country. She stated that Nigeria is grappling with economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and dollar subsidies, which have increased the hardship faced by many citizens. However, she argued that these reforms are aimed at long-term benefits, such as attracting foreign investment.
She accused Davido of addressing issues in a way that appeals only to elites, rather than contributing to grassroots solutions, such as supporting local industries that could empower the average Nigerian. She urged him to be more guarded in his public statements about Nigeria, especially on international platforms, as such comments could deter investors and tarnish the country’s image.
Ny’mat concluded by highlighting that Davido’s success is rooted in Nigeria, and his fame grew because of the opportunities provided by his home country. She expressed disappointment that he would “throw his roots in the pits” and called on him to use his position to serve the country better.
