The White Savior Complex is the assumption by white people from developed countries, that they should be helping save poor people in Africa. It involves scenarios like having foreign volunteers do the work of local people. Them taking pictures of the local people for their entertainment and also adopting illegally.
They also contribute to sustaining the negative stereotypes of Africa in their social media posts. They post pictures, videos or articles that do more in helping them appear good, than in helping the people they claim to help. It has been termed Poverty Porn.
How To Avoid Being a White Savior
There are white people who genuinely want to help. Here are some tips on how to avoid the White Savior Complex.
With every social media post, don’t strip the people of their dignity. Avoid using words that breed stereotypes and keep in mind that they are people, not tourist attractions.
Ask for their permission before taking or using their pictures. Also avoid taking pictures of them in degrading positions.
Why are you posting these pictures anyway? Is it for your self interest or do you actually want to help people? Lastly, keep in mind that sharing these images to raise awareness or funds shouldn’t be an excuse to neglect people’s dignity.
Don’t portray yourself as a hero!
