Ibrahim magu’s allegations are bailable, says lawyer.
The suspended Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, who is under investigation for corruption allegations has requested to be released from detention on bail.
Magu who has been in police custody since the beginning of his probe on Monday has written a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu through his lawyer, Oluwatosin Ojuamo on Friday July 10.
The embattled EFCC official has been attending his probe by the Ayo Salami-led panel at the Presidential Villa from the police station since his arrest.
The letter requested that Magu br granted bail on the grounds of ‘self-recognisance’. It bore the IGP’s stamp with the same date the letter was sent out.
It copied the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), Justice Ayo Salami (rtd) the Chairman of the Presidential Probe Panel on the activities of EFCC, Prof Itsay Sagay(SAN), the Chairman of Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption and the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Investigation, Federal Criminal Investigation Department, Garki Area 10, Abuja, where Ibrahim Magu is reportedly being detained.
Ojuamo stated in the letter to the IGP thatbhid clients allegations didn’t require detention and by implication, his client was statutorily entitled to be released on bail even when he is formally charged with offences.
The letter read in part,
“Finally, if our application for bail on self-recognisance is not acceptable, we are ready to provide a credible surety that will ensure the availability of our client anytime he is needed for the purpose of this investigation.”
The lawyer also sited the directives given to all police formations in Nigeria to refrain from detaining any suspect for bailable offences as a safety measure for the covid-19 pandemic.
Ojaomo said his client,Ibrahim Magu had denied all the allegations being investigated by the Presidential panel including the ones leveled against him by Mr Abubakar Malami(SAN) the Attorney-General of the Federation,
“and has provided both documentary and oral evidence to clear the air on all the allegations”.
