South Africa has joined the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in the round of 16 after beating Italy 3-2. They are through to the last 16 as they claim their first Women’s World Cup win with a thrilling 3-2 victory over European side Italy.
South Africa Came from Behind to Beat Italy 3-2
South Africa came from behind to make the historic win as they were one goal down in the first 11 minutes of the game. Caruso scores to put Italy in front front the penalty spot before they got an equaliser in the 32nd minute of the game through Italian Orsi’s own goal.
They headed into the first half with a 1-1 draw but the African team came back stronger as they found the back of the net to lead for the first time in the game in the 67th minute of the game through Magaia’s goal.
The Italians responded almost immediately to level the scores through Caruso’s second goal in the game. But when it seemed like all hope was gone for the South Africans Thembi Kgatlana’s 93rd-minute goal proved the difference in the game as they smiled to the next round of the tournament.
A draw in the game would have been enough to take Italy into the knockout rounds and sent the Africans home but South Africa did well to remain in the tournament with the win. They will play Group E winners the Netherlands on Sunday.
