Men and officers of the Nigerian Army and some policemen have taken over the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State following fresh mob attacks reported in the area in the early hours of Friday. Speaking with journalists, Chairman of Oyigbo LGA, Gerald Aforji confirmed that soldiers had intervened to restore calm in the area.
It was gathered that gunshots rent the area from Thursday night till Friday morning as soldiers repelled the hoodlums but there were still flashes of violence in the area. According to the state Police Command, members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB were responsible for killing two of its operatives and burning of two police stations in the area on Wednesday.
You will recall that the state governor, Nyesom Wike had placed a 24-hour curfew on the local government but residents said they could not sleep because of the attacks.
Everyevery.ng reported that Wike imposed a 24hrs curfew on three local government areas in the state noting that the EndSARS protest has been hijacked by hoodlums to unleash terror and destroy property. He added that some hoodlums attacked and destroyed Police Stations and Court buildings in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State.
The areas where the 24-hrs curfew was imposed are Mile 1, Mile 2, Emenike, Ikokwu and Iloaubuchi areas of Port Harcourt, the entire Oyigbo Local Government Area and Oil mill area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
Wike, who said security agencies have been directed to enforce the curfew with effect from 6.30 p.m Wednesday, 21st October 2020 further stated that local Government Chairmen have been directed to mobilize vigilantes and work with security agencies to ensure that no hoodlum is allowed to disturb the peace or destroy lives and property in their Local Government Areas.
