The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) says 9,246 Nigerian teachers failed the Batch A professional qualifying exam held in July 2020.
According to the council’s registrar, Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, about 44,363 candidates registered for the examination but the total examined was 37,340 candidates adding that about 7,023 candidates didn’t write the exam.
He stated that a large number of candidates (Nigerian teachers) could not move around or write the examination due to the prevalence of Covid-19.
Ajiboye added that the majority of the teachers have written the exam before and will be allowed to write the exam at the next available opportunity.
Meanwhile, he opined that pre-service teachers are gradually getting familiarised with the use of computers adding that failure was very high when the examination started.
Speaking on the reason for introducing the teacher qualifying exam, Ajiboye stated that the council felt everybody can’t walk into the profession and register without a professional examination.
