Vice president Yemi Osinbajo has called for a national debate to reduce the size and cost of governance in Nigeria. He admitted that our size of governance has always been classified as expensive and unsustainable. He, however, accepted that the government might not be able to cut the cost by itself. He revealed these things while responding to questions asked by former Governor of CBN and former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, in a webinar on Friday.

Sanusi pointed out that the GDP of Atlanta which is not even the richest state in the US is higher than that of entire Nigeria. He also compared our budget to the annual sales of Tesla which of course Nigeria cannot measure up to. Sanusi therefore made a call on Nigeria to begin cutting its coat according to its size.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi went ahead to offer some solutions that Nigeria might begin with if it is prepared to cut the cost of governance. He suggested that legislatures could be made to work part time.

Osinbajo recognised that Nigeria is currently running on an extravagant scale. However, he pointed out that there may be need to begin the amendment from the constitution to enable the decision function. He however, accepted the reduction of size and cost of governance but hedged it on the result of public debate.
