Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, voiced his disappointment following the Super Eagles’ narrow 2-1 loss to Cote d’Ivoire in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations final, labelling it a bitter conclusion to the tournament.
Taking to Instagram, Nwabali extended his apologies to the Super Eagles’ fans, recognizing the anguish they must be feeling. Despite initially seizing the lead in the 18th-minute courtesy of William Troost-Ekong’s header, Nigeria faltered as Cote d’Ivoire managed to level the score in the 63rd minute before clinching victory with a late strike in the 87th minute. The jubilant scenes at the Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan underscored the disappointment for Nigeria.
Accompanied by a poignant image capturing his dejection on the field, Nwabali conveyed his sentiments, stating: “A disheartening and frustrating end. I extend my sincere apologies to all Nigerians. As a former fan and now a player, I comprehend the pain of a disappointing night. We shoulder the responsibility entirely. Thank you for your unwavering support until the end. I cherish you all.”
