The Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi has confirmed that the hospital has recorder its first case of COVID-19.
The Chief Medical Doctor (CMD) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anthony Igwegbe made this known on Monday, disclosing that the patient was given a coronavirus test upon diagnosis by a doctor in the hospital.
He said, “The patient was quickly moved from our isolation ward to the Anambra state Treatment Centre last night for care and treatment.
“The patient, a male trader resident in Onitsha was admitted to the isolation ward following proper triage on his presentation on May 20, Specimen for the test was taken the following day and sent to Irrua,”
The CMD said the patient was moved to one of the isolation centres in the state after his test result confirmed him to have the virus on 23rd May.
Prof. Igwegbe also told news reporters that the hospital had another patient who was a suspected case, but that his sample could not be taken before he passed on.
“So we have only one confirmed case of COVID-19 in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) so far,”
The hospital said they took all precautions while handling the patient, including the use of PPE, also assuring the public that they would remain vigilant in the discharge of their duties.
