The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC has approved the trial of embedded Subscriber Identification Modules (e-SIM) Service in Nigeria.
MTN Nigeria and 9Mobile were approved to carry out the trial to determine its workability.
According to NCC, the trial would run for one year, involving testing 5,000 e-SIMs by the two networks.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Public Affairs Director of NCC, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde.
Adinde said the trial is subject to compliance with some regulatory conditions.
He said the conditions include full compliance by the MNOs with the Registration of Telecoms Subscribers Regulations 2011.
Another condition is the Mobile Number Portability Regulations and Business Rules 2015.
Furthermore, the guidelines on SIM Replacement 2017.
An e-SIM is a small chip that is embedded on a mobile phone or smart devices.
It enhances convenience, flexibility and simplicity.
