Moderna, a US pharmaceutical company, has announced that its experimental vaccine has shown to be 94.5% effective against COVID-19 from early results.
Moderna has become the second US pharmaceutical company to release data on a vaccine against coronavirus.
The company went on to explain that the first analysis was based on 95 cases of COVID-19 including 15 adults aged 65 years or over, and 20 participants from diverse communities.
The results come hot on the heels of similar results from Pfizer, and add to growing confidence that vaccines can help end the pandemic.
Both companies used a highly innovative and experimental approach to designing their vaccines.
Moderna says it is a “great day” and they plan to apply for approval to use the vaccine in the next few weeks.
However, it is important to note that this is still early data and key questions remain unanswered.
