Modern day slavery may be viewed as a myth or something impossible. Investigative reporters from Aljazeera discovered a ring of modern day slavery happening right under our noses.
The findings caused a warning from Britain’s anti-slavery commissioner that companies across the UK could unwittingly be using modern-day slaves.
But Kevin Hyland, the UK’s independent anti-slavery commissioner, said that “new laws mean that ignorance is no longer an excuse”.
Secret filming by Al Jazeera uncovered shocking conditions at a carwash in Kent, southeast England, used by dealerships for the auto giants, Volvo and Kia.
Further, investigations showed; Workers living in small containers, they were being paid $50 for a 12-hour shift.
Many of these individuals, travel a far distance looking for a better life for themselves and their families. They suffer physical and verbal abuse, have their wages withheld for causing the smallest of damages.
