A rare moment of solidarity lit up the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday as human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, shared a powerful exchange with detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a viral video that has captured nationwide attention, Sowore was seen greeting Kanu warmly inside the courtroom, offering words of encouragement that resonated beyond the four walls of the court. “Mazi, you will be out!” Sowore declared with conviction, drawing a smile from Kanu, who responded, “Good to see you,” before the two men embraced tightly.
The brief but emotional encounter came just days after Sowore led a protest in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release a move that reaffirmed his long-standing stance on human rights and political freedom in Nigeria.
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been in detention since his arrest and extradition from Kenya in 2021. His prolonged trial has continued to stir national and international debate over the Nigerian government’s handling of dissent and self-determination movements.
Sowore’s visit to the courtroom not only reignited public discourse on the matter but also symbolised a moment of unity among two prominent figures known for their defiance against political oppression.
While legal proceedings against Kanu continue, Thursday’s courtroom moment offered a glimmer of hope a reminder that, even in the face of prolonged confinement, solidarity and belief in justice remain unshaken.
