Instagram apologizes for flagging End SARS posts as false information
American microblogging platform, Instagram has profusely apologized to Nigerians and other social activists for incorrectly marking all content on the ongoing #EndSARS campaign as false information.
These restrictions started after the Lekki massacre on Tuesday 20th of October 2020 and infuriated citizens took to social media to share pictures and videos of the killings but to their surprise, all posts relating to the #EndSARS was flagged as false information. This development got the app users even angrier and as a result, they lashed out Mark Zuckerberg who is the owner of the app with some threatening to discontinue use of the app.
In a statement released by Instagram’s official communications twitter page, @Instagramcomms, they admitted that they had incorrectly marked down the #EndSARS and #Lekkimassacre posts and also apologized for letting the community down at such a sensitive time. The statement read,
“Yesterday our systems were incorrectly flagging content in support of #EndSARS, and marking posts as false. We are deeply sorry for this. The issue has now been resolved, and we apologize for letting our community down in such a time of need.”
