A member of the House of Representatives, Victor Mela, might be in trouble. The lawmaker representing Billiri/Balanga federal constituency has been found guilty of perjury for lying to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
According to a magistrate court in Wuse, Zone 6, Abuja, he has been found guilty of lying under oath. The court stated that Mela lied under oath while filling a form before INEC.
He was accused of filling in a wrong information in the INEC form CF001 prior to the 2019 elections.
The House of Reps member’s lawyer however pleaded for mercy, asking for a different day for judgement.
Mela’s trouble started when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, filled a case against his emergence. The PDP’s candidate, Ali Isa, filled against him after INEC declared him winner of the election.
Meanwhile, Mela says he is going to file an appeal against this conviction on perjury. He also urged his supporters to remain call.
“I would like to call on our friends, supporters and our sympathisers to remain calm as well as rest assured that I will challenge today’s perverse decision at the appellate court, immediately. In the same light, I will continue to discharge the functions of my office as the legislator representing the good people of Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, Gombe State. The House of Representatives seat which I occupy today as a result of your trust and belief in me remains intact. Together we shall prevail! Thank you all!”
